La Mirada, California - There were 16 athletes forming the Quebec delegation in Los Angeles this past weekend to participate in the Can-Am Championship for para-swimmers which included athletes from over 10 countries. Benoit Huot was one of the canadian to reach the top of the podium.
In the S10 category, Huot won the 200m Individual medley and 400m freestyle.
In the finals in the 200m IM, presented Friday evening, Benoit posted a time of 2:17.03 to get ahead by more than one second of the Paralympic champion in this event, the Australian Rick Pendleton, who finished second in 2:18.08. Saturday, he won the 400m freestyle with a time 4:21.31. "I am very happy with these results since we were not in optimal conditions," says Huot, as he swam all his events in a training suit for the Can-Am meet. "Also, I came directly from Florida where we are in heavy training with the rest of my team. "
"It was about 12 degrees, which is unusually cold in California at this time of the year. Despite the cold and my heavy workload at the moment, I managed to defeat the Paralympic champion in the 200m individual medley, which looks good for the London Games in 2012. "
The next event of for the para-swimmers will be the Paralympic trials for London 2012. The competition will be presented at the Olympic pool in Montreal at the end of March.
